Mr. M Khunou holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and is a Professional Accountant (SA), designated by the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA). He holds the Public Sector Professional (PSP(SA)) designation from the Chartered Institute of Government Finance, Audit & Risk Officers (CIGFARO) and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Audit Governance, Oversight and Leadership (CIAGOL(SA)).
With over 10 years of experience across National, Provincial, and Local spheres of government as well as private audit consulting, Mr. Khunou provides strategic financial leadership and audit recovery expertise.
Career Journey & Foundations
Demonstrating a strong commitment to governance and professional excellence, Mr. Khunou began his career in the private sector with MDS Accountants & Auditors as a Business Development Consultant.
He subsequently transitioned into the public sector, holding key positions including:
- State Accountant — Dept. of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements & Traditional Affairs
- Finance Clerk — Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA)
- Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP) trainee
- Bank Reconciliation Officer and Revenue Manager at local municipality
Executive Leadership
Mr. Khunou served as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Head of the Budget and Treasury Office at a Local Municipality, and was later appointed as Chief Financial Officer at a District Municipality.
In this capacity, he provided overarching strategic financial leadership, oversight, and governance across the District Municipality and its five constituent Local Municipalities—strengthening institutional capacity, enforcing statutory compliance, and supporting sustainable service delivery.
